Ringåbningspolymerisering

Ringåbningspolymerisering, sometimes referred to as ring-opening polymerization (ROP), is a polymerization technique where cyclic monomers undergo ring-opening to form a linear polymer chain. Unlike chain-growth polymerization where monomers add to a growing chain end, in ROP, the ring structure of the monomer is broken, and the reactive species is incorporated into the polymer backbone. This process can be initiated by various species, including cations, anions, radicals, or coordination complexes.

The mechanism of ROP depends on the initiator and the type of monomer. For example, in cationic ROP, a carbocation initiates the ring opening, and the propagating species is a carbocation. Similarly, anionic ROP involves anionic initiators and propagating anions. Coordination ROP, often used for monomers like epoxides and lactones, involves a metal center coordinating to the monomer, facilitating the ring opening and insertion into the growing polymer chain.

Ring-åbningspolymerisering is a versatile method used to synthesize a wide range of polymers with specific properties. It is particularly important for the production of polyesters, polyethers, polyamides, and polycarbonates.
