Rikkoutuu

Rikkoutuu is a Finnish verb form meaning to become broken or to break in an intransitive sense. It describes a change of state in objects that sustain damage, typically without an explicit agent performing the breaking. The form is used for both concrete objects, such as glass or doors, and for abstract things, like plans or systems, when they suffer damage or fail.

Grammatically, rikkoutua is an intransitive verb. The present indicative third-person singular is rikkoutuu, as in Ovi rikkoutuu helposti ("The door breaks easily" or "The door tends to break easily"). The past tense is rikkoutui, as in Ikkuna rikkoutui eilen ("The window broke yesterday"). The past participle is rikkoutunut, used to form phrases like Se on rikkoutunut ("It is broken").

Rikkoutua is related to the active verb rikkoutoa or rikkouttaa in usage, but it is preferred when the emphasis is on the object undergoing damage rather than on someone causing it. The direct opposite, to deliberately break something, is expressed with rikkoa (to break) in the transitive sense.

Common usages include literal breakage of physical items, as in lasi rikkoutui ("the glass broke"), and metaphorical breakage, such as suunnitelma rikkoutuu or suhde voi rikkoutua ("the plan falls apart" or "the relationship breaks down"). The adjective form rikkoutunut is frequently used to describe objects that are already broken, as in rikkoutunut televisio.
