Rikkihappoanhydridiä, also known as sulfur trioxide (SO3), is a chemical compound with the formula SO3. It is a colorless solid or liquid at room temperature, though it often appears as a white crystalline substance. Sulfur trioxide is a highly reactive and corrosive substance, a key intermediate in the industrial production of sulfuric acid.

It exists in several polymeric forms, with trimeric cyclotrimer (S3O3)3 and polymeric chains being common. The gas phase is monomeric. Rikkihappoanhydridiä reacts violently with water to form sulfuric acid (H2SO4), a reaction that releases a significant amount of heat. This strong affinity for water makes it a powerful dehydrating agent.

Industrially, sulfur trioxide is primarily produced through the contact process, where sulfur dioxide (SO2) is oxidized over a vanadium pentoxide catalyst at high temperatures. This SO3 is then absorbed into concentrated sulfuric acid to produce oleum, which is subsequently diluted with water to achieve the desired concentration of sulfuric acid.
