Riistvarakihi

Riistvarakihi, also known as the New Zealand greenling, is a species of marine fish belonging to the family Kyphosidae. It is native to the coastal waters of New Zealand, where it inhabits rocky reefs and shallow waters up to depths of 100 meters. The riistvarakihi is a small fish, typically reaching lengths of around 15 centimeters, with a slender, elongated body and a distinctive greenish coloration. Its diet primarily consists of small crustaceans and other invertebrates.

The riistvarakihi is of particular interest to marine biologists due to its unique reproductive strategy. Unlike many fish species, the riistvarakihi does not have a distinct sex. Instead, individuals can change their sex from male to female or vice versa depending on environmental conditions and social interactions. This sexual plasticity is a rare phenomenon in the animal kingdom and is thought to be an adaptation to the variable and often harsh conditions of its coastal habitat.

The conservation status of the riistvarakihi is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN. However, like many marine species, it faces threats from habitat degradation, pollution, and overfishing.
