Friction ridges are the raised patterns of skin found on the fingers, palms, and soles of the feet. These patterns, including loops, whorls, and arches, are unique to each individual and remain unchanged throughout a person's life. The detailed characteristics within these patterns, such as ridge endings and bifurcations (where a ridge splits into two), are known as minutiae points.

Ridgesäännöllisyytenä refers to the consistency and predictability of these friction ridges within a specific pattern. In fingerprint analysis, examiners look for both general ridge flow and the specific arrangement of minutiae. A high degree of "ridgesäännöllisyytenä" would suggest a clear, well-defined pattern with the expected characteristics for its type. Conversely, poor ridgesäännöllisyytenä might indicate a smudged print, an incomplete impression, or a pattern with unusual deviations that could complicate identification.
