Riderbusting refers to the practice of identifying and exposing individuals who use ride-sharing services, such as Uber or Lyft, under false pretenses. This often involves drivers or third parties posing as passengers to trick drivers into accepting rides, typically to steal money or personal information. The term originated from the practice of "passenger busting," where scammers would exploit loopholes in ride-sharing platforms to defraud drivers.

The most common form of riderbusting involves scammers using fake accounts to request rides, often from drivers who are new or less experienced. Once accepted, the passenger may claim they do not have the app open, that the ride was canceled, or that the driver was not the one assigned. In some cases, scammers may demand money upfront, claiming it is for "tips" or "extra fees," before disappearing. Another tactic involves passengers pretending to be in distress, such as a medical emergency, to manipulate drivers into providing assistance or accepting unfair fares.

Ride-sharing companies have implemented various measures to combat riderbusting, including driver verification processes, real-time tracking, and reporting systems for suspicious activity. Drivers are also encouraged to verify passenger details before accepting rides and to trust their instincts if something seems off.
