Riboszómakomplexek, often referred to as ribosomal complexes, are macromolecular assemblies essential for protein synthesis within living cells. These complexes are formed by the association of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and ribosomal proteins, creating the functional machinery known as the ribosome. Ribosomes themselves are divided into two major subunits, a large subunit and a small subunit, which come together to perform the intricate process of translation.

The small ribosomal subunit is primarily responsible for binding messenger RNA (mRNA) and ensuring accurate decoding of the genetic code. The large ribosomal subunit, on the other hand, catalyzes the formation of peptide bonds between amino acids, thereby elongating the polypeptide chain. Within the ribosome, specific binding sites are designated for mRNA, transfer RNA (tRNA) molecules carrying amino acids, and the growing polypeptide chain.

The formation of these ribosomal complexes is a highly regulated process. Ribosomal proteins assemble with rRNA molecules in a specific order, often aided by accessory factors, to produce functional subunits. These subunits are then exported from the nucleus (in eukaryotes) to the cytoplasm where they associate with mRNA to initiate translation. The dynamic nature of ribosomal complexes allows them to move along the mRNA template, reading codons and recruiting the appropriate aminoacyl-tRNAs to build proteins. Disruptions in the formation or function of ribosomal complexes can lead to various cellular defects and are implicated in several diseases, highlighting their critical role in cellular life.
