Ribosoomiallüüksusega, often translated as ribosomal association or ribosomal binding, refers to the process by which ribosomes, the cellular machinery responsible for protein synthesis, attach to messenger RNA (mRNA) molecules. This binding is a crucial initial step in translation, the process of converting the genetic code from mRNA into a protein sequence.

Ribosomal association can occur in different ways depending on the organism and the specific mRNA. In prokaryotes, such as bacteria, ribosomes can directly bind to specific sequences on the mRNA called Shine-Dalgarno sequences, which are located upstream of the start codon. This direct binding allows for relatively simple initiation of translation.

In eukaryotes, the process is more complex. Ribosomes typically bind to the 5' cap of the mRNA molecule and then scan along the mRNA until they encounter the start codon (AUG). This scanning mechanism helps to ensure that translation begins at the correct location on the mRNA. Specific initiation factors are involved in facilitating this ribosomal association in eukaryotes.

The efficiency and regulation of ribosomal association are vital for controlling gene expression. Factors that affect mRNA structure, the presence of regulatory proteins, and the availability of initiation factors can all influence how readily ribosomes bind to mRNA and initiate protein synthesis. Dysregulation of this process can lead to various cellular abnormalities and diseases.
