Ribociclibiin

Ribociclib is an oral medication used in the treatment of certain types of breast cancer. It belongs to a class of drugs known as cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitors, specifically CDK4 and CDK6 inhibitors. These enzymes play a role in cell division, and by inhibiting them, ribociclib helps to slow down or stop the growth of cancer cells.

Ribociclib is typically prescribed in combination with hormone therapy, such as an aromatase inhibitor or fulvestrant, for postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HR+/HER2-) advanced or metastatic breast cancer. It is also approved for use in pre- or postmenopausal women with HR+/HER2- advanced or metastatic breast cancer in combination with fulvestrant after initial endocrine therapy.

The mechanism of action involves blocking the activity of CDK4 and CDK6, which are involved in the progression of the cell cycle from the G1 phase to the S phase. By disrupting this process, ribociclib prevents cancer cells from proliferating.

Common side effects of ribociclib can include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hair loss, and changes in blood cell counts, such as neutropenia. Regular monitoring of blood counts and liver function is important during treatment. It is administered orally once daily, typically for 21 days followed by a 7-day rest period.
