Ribagorçana

Ribagorçana refers to a geographical and cultural region situated in the eastern Pyrenees, straddling the border between Aragon and Catalonia in Spain. It encompasses the historic County of Ribagorza. The region is characterized by its rugged mountain landscapes, deep valleys, and numerous rivers, the most prominent being the river Ésera. Historically, Ribagorza was a significant county in the medieval Kingdom of Aragon. Its strategic location made it a territory of contention and a melting pot of cultures.

The inhabitants of Ribagorçana, often referred to as Ribagorzans, speak Aragonese dialects in the western parts and Catalan dialects in the eastern areas, reflecting the region's historical linguistic and cultural divisions. The economy traditionally relied on agriculture, particularly sheep farming, and forestry. In recent decades, tourism, especially ecotourism and winter sports, has become increasingly important. Notable features of the landscape include the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, home to some of the highest peaks in the Pyrenees.
