Rhantigenen
Rhantigenen is a term used to refer collectively to the antigens of the Rh blood group system found on the surface of red blood cells. The most clinically important Rh antigen is the D antigen, which defines a person’s Rh status as positive or negative in routine testing. The Rh system also includes the C/c and E/e antigen pairs, which are encoded by variants of the RHCE gene; the D antigen is encoded by the RHD gene. The genes are located on chromosome 1 and show extensive allelic variation. Variation in these genes leads to differences in antigen expression, including weak D and partial D phenotypes, with implications for transfusion and pregnancy.
