Reviirikäyttäytyminen, or territorial behavior, refers to the actions an animal takes to defend an area against intruders. This area, known as a territory, is typically occupied by an individual or a group and is used for activities such as breeding, feeding, or resting. The size and nature of a territory can vary greatly depending on the species, its ecological niche, and resource availability.

Animals employ a range of strategies to establish and defend their territories. These can include vocalizations, such as bird songs or wolf howls, which serve as auditory warnings to potential rivals. Visual displays, like the prominent plumage of some birds or the baring of teeth in mammals, are also common. Scent marking, through urine, feces, or specialized glands, is another effective method for delineating territorial boundaries and communicating presence. Physical aggression, including chasing, fighting, or even killing intruders, represents the most direct form of territorial defense.

The benefits of territorial behavior are substantial. Successful territory defense ensures access to vital resources like food and mates, increasing an animal's survival and reproductive success. For many species, a territory provides a safe haven from predators and a stable environment for raising young. However, territorial defense also carries costs, such as the expenditure of energy, the risk of injury during confrontations, and the potential loss of valuable time that could otherwise be spent foraging or mating. The balance between these costs and benefits shapes the intensity and form of territorial behavior observed in different species.
