Reunavalaisutekniikka, a Finnish term, translates to edge lighting technique in English. It refers to a method of illuminating a surface from its edges. This technique is commonly employed in various applications, particularly in display technologies and architectural lighting. In the context of displays, such as older LCD screens, edge lighting involves placing light sources, typically LEDs, along the perimeter of the panel. Light is then guided across the display surface using a light guide plate, creating a uniform illumination necessary for the pixels to be visible. This approach was a cost-effective and power-efficient way to backlight displays, though it has largely been superseded by full-array local dimming (FALD) in higher-end devices for better contrast and black levels.
