Retseptoritüüpe refers to the classification of biological receptors. Receptors are protein molecules that receive chemical signals from outside the cell. When a signaling molecule, known as a ligand, binds to a specific receptor, it triggers a cellular response. Receptors are crucial for cell communication and play a vital role in numerous physiological processes.

There are several broad categories of receptors. One major type is cell surface receptors, which are embedded in the cell membrane and detect molecules that cannot cross the membrane. Another significant category is intracellular receptors. These receptors are located within the cytoplasm or nucleus of the cell and bind to ligands that can pass through the cell membrane, such as steroid hormones and thyroid hormones. Upon ligand binding, these receptors often act as transcription factors, directly influencing gene expression.

The specificity of receptor-ligand interaction is paramount. Each receptor typically binds to a specific ligand or a group of closely related ligands, ensuring that cellular responses are accurately regulated. This specificity is determined by the unique three-dimensional structure of the receptor's binding site.
