Retinue

Retinue is a body of people accompanying a person of rank or importance, especially in historical contexts. The term comes from Old French retinue, from retenir, meaning to retain or to hold back; in English it denotes the group kept in attendance on a sovereign or dignitary.

A retinue typically comprises personal attendants, advisers, administrators, guards, physicians, translators, pages, ushers, cooks, servants, and courtiers. In royal households, roles may include a steward, chamberlain, master of the horse, ladies-in-waiting, and other officers of the chamber. In modern usage, a leader's retinue may include aides, security personnel, communications staff, and press officers.

The retinue provides logistical support, security, ceremonial duties, and helps manage schedules, accompany on travel, provide companionship, and project authority in public appearances. Its size and composition often reflect the status and prestige of the principal, and it can function as a visible expression of power and access within political or social hierarchies.

Historically, retinues were central to feudal and court life in many cultures, with households organized around officers and ritual responsibilities. The concept continues in contemporary language as entourage or suite, though the term carries a historical connotation and varies in implication across different contexts.
