Restoration ecology is the scientific study of and the practice aimed at returning ecosystems, damaged or destroyed by previous human activity, to an original state, or an environmentally sustainable and stable state. This field combines the principles and practices of ecology, conservation biology, botany, agronomy, and soil science with management, policy and social sciences.

The goals of restoration ecology include improving ecosystem integrity, biodiversity and function, and enhancing ecosystem services such as water filtration and climate regulation. Restoration ecologists work to restore natural processes and species interactions that have been disrupted by human activities. This may involve removing invasive species and reintroducing native species, controlling invasive species growth, and maintaining hydrological and geological ecosystem processes.

Restoration ecology has many applications, including geological restoration, such as stabilizing landslides and sedimentation damages, and hydrological restoration, such as dam removal or installing flood banks. Restoration also addresses issues such as pollution remediation and erosion prevention, alleviating loss of habitats and preserving wetlands.
