Restabhängigkeit refers to a state of being dependent on the leftovers or remnants of something. This concept can manifest in various contexts. In a psychological sense, it might describe someone who is unable to move on from a past relationship, constantly dwelling on memories or the "rest" of what was. They may be fixated on what could have been or the residual feelings associated with the experience.

Economically, restabhängigkeit could be observed in situations where a business or individual relies heavily on residual income or the spoils of a past success. For example, a company that has not innovated might survive on the lingering demand for an older product, rather than developing new offerings. Similarly, an individual might live off a past inheritance or a one-time windfall without developing sustainable income streams.

In a more literal sense, restabhängigkeit can apply to resource management. A community or system that has depleted its primary resources might become dependent on the remaining, often less accessible or lower-quality, "rests" to survive. This can lead to unsustainable practices and long-term scarcity. The core idea is a reliance on what is left behind, rather than on new growth or independent creation. It often implies a lack of forward momentum or a difficulty in establishing new foundations.
