Ressortleiter

Ressortleiter is a title used in German-language media and, in some organizations, in other sectors with a modular editorial or departmental structure. The term refers to the person who heads a specific ressort (department or section), such as Politik, Wirtschaft, Kultur, or Inland, and who is responsible for the content and editorial direction of that area.

The key responsibilities of a Ressortleiter include setting the strategic focus for their ressort, planning and assigning stories, and ensuring editorial quality and adherence to deadlines and ethical standards. They supervise the editors and reporters within their team, coordinate with other departments (for instance, to align with overall newsroom priorities or cross-media projects), and manage resources, budgets, deadlines, and performance. The Ressortleiter also represents the department in the editorial hierarchy and may act as a liaising point with management, clients, or external partners.

Typical reporting lines place the Ressortleiter under the editor-in-chief or managing editor, with responsibility for the content strategy and the performance of their team. Qualifications usually include substantial experience in journalism or the relevant field, strong editorial judgment, leadership and communication skills, and the ability to develop compelling story ideas and manage multiple concurrent projects.

Variations of the role exist across organizations. In media companies, several Ressorts compete within the newsroom, while in other sectors the position may exist as a department head with broader business responsibilities. The exact scope depends on the organization’s size and structure.
