Respellings

Respellings are a linguistic phenomenon where words are intentionally written with altered spellings, deviating from standard orthography. This alteration can serve various purposes, including artistic expression, conveying a specific tone or character, or even for marketing and branding.

In creative writing, respellings might be used to represent regional dialects, the speech patterns of a specific character, or to evoke a sense of the archaic or futuristic. For instance, a character speaking in a non-standard dialect might have their dialogue respelled to reflect their pronunciation. Similarly, avant-garde poetry or experimental prose might employ respellings to challenge conventional reading habits and create new visual or phonetic effects.

Beyond literature, respellings are frequently utilized in branding and marketing.
