Resodding

Resodding is the process of replacing an existing lawn with new sod. Sod, also known as turf, is a strip of grass and its underlying soil held together by roots. This method of lawn establishment is quicker than seeding and can be done at various times of the year, depending on climate and grass type.

The primary reasons for resodding include repairing severely damaged lawns, correcting drainage issues, or when a quick aesthetic improvement is desired. Common causes of lawn damage that might lead to resodding include disease, insect infestation, excessive foot traffic, or poor soil conditions. Resodding can also be chosen to introduce a different grass species or a more aesthetically pleasing variety.

The process typically begins with the removal of the old turf, often using a sod cutter. The soil underneath is then prepared, which may involve tilling, amending with compost or other soil conditioners, and grading to ensure proper water runoff. Once the soil is prepared, the new sod is laid. This is usually done in a staggered pattern, similar to laying bricks, to create a seamless appearance. After laying, the sod is pressed down to ensure good contact with the soil, and immediate and consistent watering is crucial for the new sod to establish its roots.

The benefits of resodding include immediate visual appeal and a mature lawn appearance from the outset. It also helps prevent soil erosion in the short term compared to seeding. However, resodding can be more expensive than seeding, and the success of the new lawn depends heavily on proper soil preparation and ongoing care, particularly watering.
