Représenter

Représumer is a French verb meaning to represent, to depict, to portray, or more broadly to stand for or to act on behalf of someone or something. It can denote presenting an image or scene, presenting an idea, or standing in for a person or group in legal, political, or formal contexts. The reflexive form se représenter exists and can mean imagining or recalling something to oneself, or presenting oneself in a certain situation.

Etymology and origin: Représenter comes from the prefix re- plus présenter, the latter from Latin praesentare, “to present.” The prefix does not imply repetition in everyday use; rather, it forms a unit meaning to represent or present again, in the sense of presenting on behalf of or as a representation.

Other tenses follow the standard pattern for -er verbs: j’ai représenté (passé composé), je représentais (imparfait), je représenterai (futur), que je représente (subjonctif), etc. The verb is transitive and commonly takes a direct object: représenter quelqu’un ou quelque chose (to represent someone or something), représenter une image ou une idée (to depict or present an image or idea). It can also describe acting for someone in a legal or organizational capacity: représenter un client, représenter un pays à une conférence.
