Repressoreita is a Finnish term that translates to "repressors" in English. In molecular biology, repressors are proteins that bind to specific DNA sequences, typically in the promoter region of a gene, and inhibit or block the transcription of that gene. This binding action prevents RNA polymerase from initiating transcription, effectively turning the gene "off." Repressors are crucial components of gene regulation, allowing cells to control which genes are expressed at any given time and in response to environmental cues or developmental signals.

The mechanism of repression involves the repressor protein interacting with a DNA sequence called an operator. This operator sequence is often located within or near the gene's promoter. When the repressor binds to the operator, it can physically obstruct the binding of RNA polymerase to the promoter or block the movement of RNA polymerase along the DNA. This prevents the synthesis of messenger RNA (mRNA), and consequently, the protein encoded by the gene is not produced.
