Reparationscaféer

Reparationscaféer are volunteer-driven community events where people bring broken goods and work with repair volunteers to fix them. The aim is to extend the life of objects, save money, and promote practical repair skills while reducing waste.

The repair café movement began in the Netherlands in 2009, initiated by Martine Postma, as a response to planned obsolescence and growing e-waste. It has since spread internationally, with many cities hosting regular sessions in libraries, community centers, and maker spaces.

Operations typically involve a venue, an intake area where items are assessed, and a team of repair volunteers with diverse expertise. Attendees learn by doing, while volunteers share knowledge and tools; common items include electronics, small appliances, bicycles, furniture, and clothing. Some events provide spare parts or guidance about compatibility, and repairs may be free with donations requested.
