Reninangiotensiinialosteronijärjestelmä, often abbreviated as RAA-järjestelmä, is a complex hormonal system that plays a critical role in regulating blood pressure and fluid balance in the body. It is a vital component of the cardiovascular system's regulatory mechanisms.

The system is initiated in the kidneys when they detect a drop in blood pressure, reduced blood flow, or low sodium levels. In response, the juxtaglomerular cells in the kidneys release an enzyme called renin. Renin then acts on angiotensinogen, a protein produced by the liver and circulating in the blood, converting it into angiotensin I.

Angiotensin I is then further processed by an enzyme called angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), which is found primarily in the lungs. ACE converts angiotensin I into angiotensin II. Angiotensin II is a potent vasoconstrictor, meaning it narrows blood vessels, which directly increases blood pressure.

Furthermore, angiotensin II stimulates the adrenal glands to release aldosterone. Aldosterone is a hormone that acts on the kidneys, promoting the reabsorption of sodium and water. This increased sodium and water retention leads to a higher blood volume, which also contributes to an increase in blood pressure. The RAA system also influences thirst, further contributing to fluid balance.

Dysregulation of the RAA system can lead to various health conditions, including hypertension (high blood pressure), heart failure, and kidney disease. Many medications used to treat these conditions, such as ACE inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), target and inhibit specific components of this crucial system.
