Relativizationclarifying, sometimes known as the relativization-clarification problem, is a concept in computational complexity theory and formal language theory. It addresses the relationship between relativizing and non-relativizing proof techniques when attempting to resolve major open problems, most notably the P versus NP problem.

A proof technique is said to be relativizing if it remains valid when all involved complexity classes are augmented with an oracle. An oracle is a hypothetical device that can solve a particular problem instantaneously. Many classic results, such as the time hierarchy theorem, have relativizing proofs.

The core issue is that for problems like P versus NP, there exist oracles for which P equals NP is true relative to that oracle, and other oracles for which it is false. This demonstrates that any proof resolving the P versus NP problem must therefore be non-relativizing; it must rely on some technique that does not work for all possible oracles. Such a proof must exploit specific, non-relativizable properties of Turing machines.

This concept clarifies that resolving certain central conjectures in complexity theory requires more sophisticated, non-relativizing methods. The development of techniques like arithmetization, which underpinned the proof of IP = PSPACE, exemplifies the kind of breakthrough needed to move beyond the limitations imposed by relativization.
