Relationdenoting

Relationdenoting refers to a class of linguistic expressions whose primary function is to denote a relation between entities rather than a single object or property. In formal semantics, a relationdenoting item is modeled as a predicate of a certain arity, capable of taking multiple arguments. The simplest cases are one-place relations, which express properties, but true relationdenoting expressions typically involve two or more arguments.

Two-place relationdenoting items include many prepositions and relational nouns. Prepositions such as between, alongside, behind encode a relation holding between two entities. Relational nouns such as kin, rival, partner denote a link between the referent and another individual or social role. Adjectival or adjectival-like forms can also function relationally, indicating a position or link relative to another entity (for example, relative, opposite in a relational sense).

Three- and higher-arity relations are most common with verbs and certain eventive predicates. Verbs like give, tell, or award relate three participants (agent, theme, recipient), while relationally specific predicates encode more complex linkages among multiple arguments. The distinction between relationdenoting expressions and individual-denoting or property-denoting terms is a basic concern in lexical semantics, argument structure, and theta-role theory.

Cross-linguistically, relationdenoting items show substantial variation in form and marking, including case systems, spatial and temporal prepositions, and relational nouns. The concept is central to discussions of valency, binding, and the way syntax maps to semantic relations. Note that the term is not universally standardized; it is sometimes described using related labels such as relational predicates or dyadic/ polyadic predicates.
