Relatiiviklausetyypit refers to the classification of relative clauses in linguistics. Relative clauses are dependent clauses that modify a noun or noun phrase. They typically begin with a relative pronoun such as "who," "whom," "whose," "which," or "that," or a relative adverb like "where," "when," or "why."

There are two main types of relative clauses: restrictive and non-restrictive.

A restrictive relative clause provides essential information that is necessary to identify the noun or noun phrase it modifies. Without this clause, the meaning of the sentence would be unclear or incomplete. Restrictive clauses are not set off by commas. For example, in the sentence "The book that I borrowed is overdue," the clause "that I borrowed" is restrictive because it specifies which book is overdue.

A non-restrictive relative clause, on the other hand, provides additional, non-essential information about a noun or noun phrase that is already clearly identified. This information is supplementary and does not change the core meaning of the sentence. Non-restrictive clauses are typically set off by commas. For instance, in the sentence "My brother, who lives in London, is visiting next week," the clause "who lives in London" is non-restrictive; we already know which brother is being referred to.

The distinction between these two types is crucial for understanding sentence structure and meaning, as well as for correct punctuation. The choice between restrictive and non-restrictive depends on whether the information in the clause is considered indispensable for identification or merely descriptive.
