Rekurrenttikerrokset, often translated as recurrent layers or recurrent neural network layers, are a fundamental component in artificial neural networks designed for processing sequential data. Unlike standard feedforward neural networks where information flows in one direction, recurrent layers possess internal memory, allowing them to retain information from previous inputs in the sequence. This memory mechanism is typically achieved through loops or feedback connections within the layer, enabling the output at a given time step to be influenced by both the current input and the hidden state from the preceding time step.

The ability of recurrent layers to maintain a state over time makes them particularly well-suited for tasks involving sequences such as natural language processing, speech recognition, and time series analysis. For instance, in language translation, a recurrent layer can process words one by one, building an understanding of the sentence's context and meaning as it progresses. Common architectures incorporating recurrent layers include the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) networks, which were developed to address the vanishing gradient problem that can hinder the learning of long-term dependencies in simpler recurrent networks. The hidden state acts as a summary of past information, which is then updated and passed along to the next step in the sequence.
