Rehevöitynyt is a Finnish term that describes a state of eutrophication or overgrowth, particularly in aquatic ecosystems. It signifies an increase in nutrient levels, typically nitrogen and phosphorus, leading to an excessive proliferation of algae and other aquatic plants. This phenomenon can cause a cascade of negative environmental effects.

When nutrients become abundant, phytoplankton and macrophytes bloom rapidly. This dense growth can block sunlight from reaching submerged vegetation, hindering their growth and survival. The decomposition of this excessive biomass consumes dissolved oxygen in the water, creating hypoxic or anoxic conditions. These low oxygen levels can be detrimental or fatal to fish and other aquatic organisms, leading to fish kills and a reduction in biodiversity.
