Regenerantteihin, often translated as "regenerants" or "regenerative materials," refers to substances or materials that are used in a process of regeneration. This term is broadly applied across various scientific and industrial fields, but its core concept involves restoring or renewing a material or system to a functional state. In the context of chemical processes, regenerants are typically employed to restore a sorbent material, such as ion-exchange resins, to its original capacity after it has been saturated with contaminants. This regeneration is achieved by flushing the sorbent with a concentrated solution of ions that compete with and displace the bound contaminants.

The specific chemical nature of a regenerant depends on the type of sorbent and the contaminants being removed. For instance, in water softening, a brine solution (sodium chloride) is used to regenerate cation-exchange resins, releasing calcium and magnesium ions and replacing them with sodium ions. Similarly, in flue gas desulfurization, regenerants like ammonia can be used to recover sulfur dioxide from a sorbent material, which can then be further processed into sulfuric acid or elemental sulfur. The efficiency and effectiveness of a regeneration process are crucial for the economic viability and environmental sustainability of many industrial operations, as it allows for the repeated use of valuable materials and reduces waste generation.
