Refleksitoiminta, or reflex action, refers to an involuntary and rapid response to a stimulus. These actions are mediated by the nervous system, specifically through reflex arcs. A reflex arc typically involves a sensory receptor that detects a stimulus, a sensory neuron that transmits the signal to the spinal cord or brainstem, an interneuron (in some reflexes) that processes the signal, a motor neuron that carries the signal away from the central nervous system, and an effector (muscle or gland) that produces the response.

The purpose of reflexes is to protect the body from harm or to maintain homeostasis. For example, the withdrawal reflex causes you to quickly pull your hand away from a hot object, preventing a burn. The patellar reflex, or knee-jerk reflex, helps maintain balance. Unlike voluntary actions, reflexes bypass conscious processing in the brain, allowing for a much faster reaction time. This rapid response is crucial for survival in many situations.

There are various types of reflexes, categorized by their complexity and the part of the central nervous system involved. Simple reflexes, like the withdrawal reflex, are innate and present from birth. Acquired or conditioned reflexes, on the other hand, are learned through experience, as demonstrated by Pavlov's experiments with dogs salivating at the sound of a bell. Reflexes are a fundamental aspect of nervous system function and play a vital role in our daily interactions with the environment.
