Refleksitoiminnot, also known as reflexes, are involuntary and nearly instantaneous movements in response to a stimulus. They are automatic responses that bypass conscious thought, allowing the body to react quickly to potentially harmful situations or maintain essential bodily functions. Reflexes are mediated by reflex arcs, which are neural pathways that typically involve a sensory receptor, an afferent neuron, an interneuron (in many cases), an efferent neuron, and an effector organ.

When a stimulus is detected by a sensory receptor, it triggers a nerve impulse that travels along the afferent neuron to the spinal cord or brainstem. In simple reflexes, the signal directly synapses with an efferent neuron. In more complex reflexes, an interneuron may process the signal before transmitting it to the efferent neuron. The efferent neuron then carries the impulse to the effector organ, such as a muscle or gland, causing a specific response.

Examples of reflexes include the knee-jerk reflex (patellar reflex), which causes the lower leg to extend when the patellar tendon is tapped, and the withdrawal reflex, where a person quickly pulls their hand away from a hot object. Autonomic reflexes, such as the regulation of heart rate, digestion, and pupil dilation, are also crucial for maintaining homeostasis. These involuntary actions are vital for survival and protection.
