Referenssilämpöjä, often translated as reference heats or reference temperatures, are specific temperatures used as benchmarks in various scientific and engineering contexts. They provide a consistent point of comparison for material properties, thermodynamic calculations, and experimental measurements. The choice of a reference temperature is crucial because many physical and chemical properties are temperature-dependent. For example, the density of a substance changes with temperature, so when a density value is reported, it is typically accompanied by the reference temperature at which it was measured.

In thermodynamics, reference states are often defined for enthalpy and entropy. These states represent a baseline from which changes in these properties can be calculated. For instance, the standard enthalpy of formation of an element in its most stable form at a standard pressure and a defined reference temperature (often 298.15 K or 25 °C) is taken to be zero. This convention simplifies the calculation of enthalpies for reactions involving that element.

Similarly, in material science, reference temperatures are used to define conditions for testing and specifying material behavior. This can include temperatures for mechanical testing, thermal expansion, or phase transitions. For certain calibration procedures in metrology, a precisely known reference temperature is essential to ensure accuracy. The International System of Units (SI) does not mandate a single universal reference temperature, but common choices are the triple point of water (273.16 K) or standard ambient temperature and pressure (SATP). The specific reference temperature employed will depend on the field and the particular application.
