Referen

Referen is a term that appears in some linguistic and semiotic literature to refer to the referent of a linguistic expression—the real-world object, person, or concept that a word or sign stands for in context. The term is closely related to the more common word "referent," but some scholars use referen to emphasize the link between linguistic form and its grounding in the environment or discourse.

Origin and usage: Referen is a relatively recent coinage, not as widely adopted as referent. It is used mainly in theoretical discussions of reference, indexicals, and anaphora, where the focus is on how context determines which entity is the referen of a given expression. In analyses of pronouns and demonstratives, referen can shift with perspective, time, or speaker.

Relation to other concepts: Referen is connected to denotation (the set of things a term could refer to) and sense (the mode of presentation). In many frameworks, the standard term referent is preferred; referen is sometimes proposed to reduce confusion in multilingual or cross-modal analyses.
