Redundanssijäämät, a Finnish term, refers to the leftover portions of data or signals that are not strictly necessary for the intended communication or information transfer. These redundant elements, while seemingly superfluous, often play a crucial role in ensuring the reliability and accuracy of data. They can be deliberately introduced or can arise as a byproduct of certain data compression or transmission techniques.

In telecommunications and digital signal processing, redundancy is frequently employed to combat errors that can occur during transmission due to noise or interference. For instance, error-correcting codes add redundant bits to a data stream. If some bits are corrupted, these redundant bits allow the receiver to detect and often correct the errors, thus reconstructing the original message accurately.
