Reduktor

Reduktor is a term used in several languages to denote something that reduces a quantity or effect. In engineering, it most often refers to a gear reducer, a device that lowers rotational speed while increasing torque. In chemistry, it denotes a reducing agent, a substance that donates electrons in a redox reaction.

A gear reducer consists of a gear train that converts high-speed, low-torque input into low-speed, high-torque output. Common configurations include spur, helical, bevel, and planetary gear reducers. The gear ratio, efficiency, and power rating determine suitability for a given motor and load. They are used in a wide range of equipment from industrial machinery to conveyors and machine tools.

In redox chemistry, a reducing agent (reduktor) reduces other species and is oxidized itself. Common examples include molecular hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and hydride donors such as sodium borohydride or lithium aluminum hydride. The corresponding oxidizing agents oxidize the reductant.
