Reductionism posits that phenomena at higher levels of organization can be fully understood by analyzing their constituent parts, often at a more fundamental level, such as physical or biological processes.

In science, reductionism has been particularly influential in fields like physics, chemistry, and biology. For instance, molecular biology applies reductionist principles by breaking down biological functions—such as gene expression or metabolism—into interactions between molecules like DNA, proteins, and enzymes. This approach has led to significant advancements, such as the decoding of the human genome.
