Reding

Reding was a small municipality in the district of Möhlin in the canton of Thurgau, Switzerland. It was situated in the Lower Rhine region on the eastern edge of the Swiss Plateau, bordered by the municipalities of Betracht and Möhlin. The settlement lay at an altitude of approximately 430 metres above sea level and covered an area of about 6.5 square kilometres.

The population of Reding in the early 2000s was around three hundred residents, with a population density that reflected the rural character of the area. The community was largely agricultural, with mixed farming, dairy production, and local artisanal crafts contributing to the local economy. Small scale manufacturing and service industries also complemented the rural landscape.

Reding's documented history dates back to medieval records from the 12th century, where it appears as a minor settlement under the authority of the Abbey of St. Blasien. Over the centuries, it maintained a modest population and slowly expanded its infrastructure, including the construction of a primary school and a parish church in the 18th century. In 2005, as part of a cantonwide municipal reorganisation, Reding merged with neighboring municipalities to form the larger municipality of Dielsdorf in the updated administrative structure of Thurgau.

The municipality was notable for its well-preserved farmhouses and a small heritage centre that showcased local historical artifacts. The area is served by regional bus routes connecting to Möhlin and Konstanz, and nearby railway lines provide access to larger Swiss cities.

Reding is also a surname of Germanic origin, found predominantly in German-speaking countries. Notable bearers include Ferdinand Reding, a 19th‑century Austrian diplomat, and writer Christina Reding, recognized for her contributions to contemporary German literature. The name has been associated with several military and diplomatic figures in Central Europe.
