Recouvrez

Recouvrez is a French verb form from the verb recouvrir, and it serves two common grammatical functions: the present tense form for the second-person plural vous (and the formal imperative mood) as in “Vous recouvrez” or “Recouvrez !” It is produced from the base recouvr- plus endings for -ir verbs, but with the distinctive endings of recouvrir: vous recouvrez, ils recouvrent.

The meaning of recouvrir centers on placing a new layer over a surface or covering something anew. It can be literal, such as coating a surface with plaster, snow, or paint, for example, “Le toit recouvre le toit de neige” (the roof is covered with snow). It can also be figurative, meaning to envelop, blanket, or obscure something, as in recouvrir une histoire de détails supplémentaires.

Etymologically, recouvrir is formed from the prefix re- (again) combined with couvrir (to cover), the latter itself evolving from older French and ultimately related to the idea of enclosing or shielding. The noun corresponding to the action is recouvrement, and the adjective or past participle form is recouvert(e).

Other important forms include je recouvre, tu recouvres, il recouvre, nous recouvrons, ils recouvrent; the past participle is recouvert. In compound tenses, the auxiliary is avoir, as in j’ai recouvert, tu as recouvert, il a recouvert.
