Receptormolekyler, also known as receptors, are a class of protein molecules that are typically embedded in the cell membrane or within the cytoplasm or nucleus of a cell. Their primary function is to bind to specific signaling molecules, such as hormones, neurotransmitters, or other signaling proteins, which are known as ligands. This binding event triggers a cascade of intracellular events, ultimately leading to a specific cellular response.

The interaction between a receptor and its ligand is highly specific, often described as a lock-and-key mechanism. The shape and chemical properties of the ligand are complementary to a particular binding site on the receptor. Once the ligand binds, it induces a conformational change in the receptor molecule.
