Receptoraktivációja refers to the process by which a receptor molecule, typically located on the surface of or within a cell, binds to a specific signaling molecule. This binding event triggers a conformational change in the receptor, initiating a cascade of intracellular events. These events often involve the activation or inhibition of other molecules, ultimately leading to a specific cellular response. The signaling molecule that binds to the receptor is known as a ligand, which can be a hormone, neurotransmitter, drug, or even another protein.

The specificity of receptor activation is crucial for cellular communication. Each receptor is designed to recognize and bind to a particular type of ligand, ensuring that the correct signals are transmitted. This selective binding is often described by the lock-and-key model, where the ligand is the key and the receptor is the lock. Once activated, the receptor can exert its effect through various mechanisms. For instance, some receptors are ion channels that open or close upon ligand binding, altering the flow of ions across the cell membrane.
