Recalls

Recalls are a term used to describe several related processes in different domains. In general, a recall refers to bringing something back into use, removing it from consideration, or retrieving information. While the word is often associated with consumer products, it is also used in psychology to describe memory retrieval and in politics to describe the process of removing an official from office.

Memory recall is a cognitive process by which a person retrieves information from memory without explicit cues. Psychologists distinguish free recall, cued recall (assistance from prompts), and serial recall (recalling items in a sequence). The process usually includes defect investigation, public notification, and a remedy program, followed by monitoring and reporting of outcomes. Recalls can affect brand trust, liability exposure, and regulatory compliance costs.

A political recall is a procedure by which voters can remove an elected official from office before the end of their term. Depending on jurisdiction, recall requires a petition demonstrating public support, followed by a vote or referendum. Recall elections have been used at local and national levels to address perceived misconduct, incompetence, or loss of public confidence. The rules governing recalls vary widely and can influence political accountability and stability.
