Reaktiokanavat, or reaction channels, are distinct pathways by which reactants may convert into products during a chemical reaction. Each channel corresponds to a particular final-state arrangement and energy distribution of the products and is often linked to a specific mechanism on the potential energy surface.

In chemical reaction dynamics, channels are defined by the identity and state of the products, including their vibrational, rotational, and electronic excitations. A reaction can proceed through several channels, and the probability for each channel is reflected in the product branching ratios. The concept also applies in scattering theory, where different channels represent different asymptotic product states.

Theoretical treatments use potential energy surfaces and transition-state theory, RRKM theory for unimolecular steps, and quantum or semiclassical scattering methods. In multichannel formalisms, the S-matrix connects incoming states to outgoing channels, and open channels are those accessible at the total energy of the system.

Experimentally, channels are studied by measuring state-resolved product distributions, spectroscopy of products, and time-resolved techniques. The observed branching ratios and energy disposal among channels help reveal the underlying mechanism and the relative importance of competing pathways.

Why it matters: understanding reaction channels is essential for modeling kinetics in combustion, atmospheric and environmental chemistry, catalysis, and astrochemistry, where product yields and energy flow determine overall reactivity and outcomes.
