Rautaytimiä, or iron cores, are a fundamental component in many electrical devices, particularly transformers and inductors. They are essentially magnetic cores made from ferromagnetic materials, primarily iron or iron alloys, designed to concentrate and guide magnetic flux. This concentration of magnetic field lines is crucial for efficient energy transfer and storage in electromagnetic applications.

The primary function of an iron core is to increase the inductance of a coil. When an electric current flows through a coil wound around an iron core, the iron's high magnetic permeability significantly enhances the magnetic field generated. This stronger magnetic field leads to a greater change in magnetic flux for a given change in current, resulting in a higher inductance. In transformers, this ability to efficiently channel magnetic flux between primary and secondary coils allows for voltage transformation with minimal energy loss.

Iron cores are typically manufactured in various shapes, such as E-cores, I-cores, and toroidal cores, depending on the specific application and desired magnetic path. The material composition is carefully chosen to balance magnetic properties like permeability and saturation flux density with electrical properties such as resistivity, which helps to minimize eddy current losses. These losses, caused by circulating currents induced within the core by changing magnetic fields, can lead to significant heating and inefficiency. Therefore, laminated iron cores, consisting of thin insulated sheets of iron, are commonly used to increase electrical resistance and reduce eddy currents.
