Rauhasepiteelit, also known as glandular epithelium, are a specialized type of epithelial tissue found throughout the body. Their primary function is secretion, meaning they are responsible for producing and releasing various substances. These substances can include hormones, enzymes, mucus, sweat, and milk, depending on the specific gland and its location.

The structure of rauhasepiteelit is adapted for their secretory role. Cells within this tissue often contain an abundance of organelles involved in protein synthesis and transport, such as the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus. They may also have secretory vesicles, which store and release their products.

Rauhasepiteelit can be organized in different ways. Exocrine glands secrete their products through ducts onto an epithelial surface or into a body cavity. Examples include sweat glands and salivary glands. Endocrine glands, on the other hand, secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream or surrounding interstitial fluid, without the use of ducts. The thyroid gland and adrenal glands are examples of endocrine glands.

The specific type of secretion can vary. Merocrine secretion involves the release of products in vesicles that fuse with the cell membrane, without any loss of cellular material. Apocrine secretion involves the shedding of a portion of the apical cytoplasm along with the secretory product. Holocrine secretion results in the entire cell disintegrating to release its contents.
