Rationalising

Rationalising refers to the process of making something logical, reasonable, or justifiable. It often involves finding explanations or reasons that make an action, belief, or situation appear more sensible, even if the underlying motivations or causes are different. In psychology, rationalisation is a defence mechanism where an individual creates an excuse or justification for their behaviour or feelings to avoid facing an unpleasant truth or to reduce cognitive dissonance. For example, someone who fails an exam might rationalise it by saying the test was unfairly difficult or that they didn't really need to pass anyway.

In mathematics, rationalising an expression involves removing radicals from the denominator of a fraction. This is typically done by multiplying both the numerator and the denominator by a suitable expression that eliminates the radical in the denominator. For instance, to rationalise 1/√2, you would multiply both the top and bottom by √2, resulting in √2/2.

The term can also be applied more broadly to any situation where simplification or logical structuring is undertaken. This might include rationalising a business process to improve efficiency, or rationalising a complex theory to make it more understandable. The core idea remains the same: to impart logic and reason to a given subject. The effectiveness and ethical implications of rationalisation can vary greatly depending on the context in which it is applied.
