Rasvaalkoholit, also known as fatty alcohols, are a group of organic compounds that are alcohols and possess a long hydrocarbon chain. They are derived from natural fats and oils, or can be synthesized from petrochemical sources. Chemically, they are characterized by a hydroxyl functional group attached to a long alkyl chain, typically with twelve to eighteen carbon atoms. This structure gives them amphipathic properties, meaning they have both a water-loving (hydrophilic) head and a water-repelling (hydrophobic) tail.

The primary applications of fatty alcohols are as intermediates in the production of detergents and surfactants. Through ethoxylation or sulfation, they are converted into non-ionic or anionic surfactants, respectively, which are essential components in soaps, shampoos, laundry detergents, and a wide range of cleaning products. Their amphipathic nature allows them to reduce surface tension, enabling oil and water to mix, thus facilitating the removal of dirt and grease.

Beyond their use in cleaning agents, fatty alcohols find applications in the cosmetics and personal care industry. They act as emollients, providing a softening and smoothing effect on the skin, and as emulsifiers, helping to blend oil and water-based ingredients in creams and lotions. They can also serve as thickeners and stabilizers in various formulations. In the pharmaceutical sector, they are used as excipients in drug delivery systems. Industrially, they are utilized in the production of lubricants, plasticizers, and as components in agricultural chemicals.
