RapidSSL

RapidSSL is a brand of SSL/TLS certificates that provides encryption for websites, positioned as a low-cost option focused on domain validation. The brand originated with GeoTrust in the 2000s and was incorporated into DigiCert’s portfolio after DigiCert acquired GeoTrust as part of the Symantec asset transfer completed in 2017. Since then, RapidSSL has continued to be marketed as an affordable DV (domain-validated) certificate line within DigiCert’s offerings.

RapidSSL certificates provide basic public-key cryptography to enable HTTPS and protect data in transit, but do not verify the organization behind a site. Validation is performed through domain control verification, typically via email or DNS challenges. The certificates use modern cryptographic algorithms (such as RSA or ECC keys with SHA-256 signatures) and are trusted by major web browsers and platforms.

Variants in the RapidSSL family typically include standard RapidSSL DV certificates and, in some markets, RapidSSL Wildcard, which cover a single domain and its subdomains. As with other public certificates, the branding and exact features (including warranties) can vary by issuing authority and product tier within DigiCert’s portfolio. Current industry rules limit the maximum certificate validity for publicly trusted DV certificates to approximately 398 days (about 13 months).

RapidSSL is commonly chosen by small websites, startups, or budget-conscious organizations that require straightforward encryption without organizational validation or extended validation. For entities needing higher assurance, DigiCert’s OV or EV offerings and other brands provide stronger identity validation and trust signals.
