Rampur

Rampur is a city and the administrative headquarters of Rampur district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, located in the Rohilkhand region. It serves as the center of local government and commerce for the surrounding rural area, and is part of the Bareilly division. The city and district are characterized by a mix of agricultural communities and small-scale industries.

Historically, Rampur formed part of the Rohilla confederacy and became the capital of Rampur State, a princely state ruled by the Nawabs of Rampur during the 18th through early 20th centuries. The state acceded to the Indian Union after independence and was integrated into Uttar Pradesh. The historical legacy is visible in architecture, courts and libraries that reflect the era of the Nawabs.

Rampur is known for its cultural traditions, particularly in music and cuisine. The city is associated with the Rampur gharana of Hindustani classical music, and its culinary specialties include Rampuri kebabs and other regional dishes that reflect local influences.
