Rahvapidu

Rahvapidu is an Estonian term that translates to "people's festival" or "folk festival." It refers to a large-scale, often multi-day event that celebrates Estonian culture, traditions, and national identity. These festivals are characterized by a wide array of activities, including traditional folk music and dance performances, handicraft exhibitions, and the sale of local produce and goods. The most prominent and well-known example of a rahvapidu is the Estonian Song and Dance Celebration (Eesti laulu- ja tantsupeo liikumine). This event, held every five years, is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It involves thousands of singers and dancers from all over Estonia, performing in massive choruses and dance ensembles. Smaller, more localized rahvapidud also occur throughout the year in various regions and villages, often tied to specific celebrations like Midsummer (Jaanipäev) or harvest festivals.
